AMPSK9 Companion Dog Class Application
7-Week Off-Leash Trail Readiness (GN)

Saturdays at 8:00 AM
Starting June 27th
West Jordan, UT
Do you want to start hiking with your dog but don’t know where to begin? Or maybe you’ve already done some exploring with your adventure buddy and realized he needs a bit more off-leash control? With trail-systems stretching thousands of miles over millions of acres of public land, hiking with dogs is a popular Utah pastime, but as anyone who’s spent time on dog-friendly trails can tell you, not every dog we encounter out there is, frankly, “trail ready.”
As an off-leash dog training instructor, I’m often contacted by owners who want to train their dogs as trail companions, and while many of my Companion Dog (CD) course graduates have gone on to have all sorts of outdoor adventures with their dogs, in my own experience I have found that the addition of certain advanced skills can make for a much more enjoyable hike. For those who want to get the most out of their adventure buddies, Trail Readiness is the course for you.
Trail Readiness is an intermediate-level course for all breeds designed to prepare your dog with the essential skills you need to navigate Utah’s wilds with your adventure buddy at your side. This hybrid class features 4 weeks of in-class instruction followed by 3 weeks of field work at nearby dog-friendly hiking trails (weather permitting). Weeks 1-4 will cover useful and necessary skills for a safe and fun off-leash hiking experience, and weeks 5-7 will consist of easy to moderate difficulty hikes with your dogs where you will have an opportunity to practice the skillset on the trail with supervision and feedback from the instructor.
What we cover:
- Polishing the Off-Leash Heel for use in narrow trail sections or while passing other hikers
- Remote Down to stop the dog in his tracks in case of danger
- Holding and Carrying objects for you when needed
- Jumping over, across, and up onto obstacles
- Recall under challenging conditions
- Stand on Command so that you can deburr his coat or install leashes, harnesses, and skid plates
Course details:
- 7 weekly sessions. 4 in-class lessons and 3 guided hikes
- $275, payable on admission
- Off-leash control required for admission
Inquiring about this class does not guarantee admission. On receiving your request to join the class, AMPSK9 will make a determination given what we know about your dog’s existing skills and temperament. If you have not enrolled in training with AMPSK9 before, you will be required to provide a demonstration of competency.
If you have questions about the class or your dog’s eligibility, call Andy or Request a Phone Consultation.
This course is capped at 10 admissions. Priority enrollment for AMPSK9 graduates.
